Harvester TPMS: the right pressure changes with the load

A harvester leaves the field empty and comes back full, and the difference sits directly on its tyres. In a harvest window measured in days, a tyre failure is not a repair bill — it is the crop.

What makes a harvester different

  • Load changes by tonnes within one pass. An empty machine and a full grain tank are two different load cases on the same tyres, and the correct pressure is not identical for both.
  • The window is short. Harvest runs to a calendar, not to a workshop schedule. A machine stopped for a tyre is a day of crop.
  • The ground is often soft. Wet field conditions are exactly when a high pressure costs the most — sinking, compaction and traction loss on the same pass.
  • Several axles and large tyres. More positions to check, and a walk-around that takes real time.

What measuring on the machine changes

A weekly gauge check samples one moment out of a working week. A sensor on every wheel position reports the state the machine is actually in — including the slow leak that starts in a wet field and the temperature rise that follows a soft tyre on a road transfer. The point is not more data; it is knowing before the machine stops.

How the system is configured

  • Sensors: external screw-on 8V1 / 12V1, or internal where the wheel is exposed; IP68.
  • Receiver: one unit on the machine, up to 256 wheel positions.
  • Output: one interface of CAN, RS232, RS485 or Modbus RTU, chosen at the factory, to the machine controller or a cab display.
  • Alarm logic: low pressure, fast leak and high temperature; thresholds can be set per position or per axle group so an empty/laden difference does not trip a false alarm.
  • No network required: the machine knows its own tyres without mobile coverage.

Questions we are asked

Will a full tank trigger false alarms?

It should not, because thresholds are set per position or per axle group rather than one figure for the machine. Tell us the empty and laden weights during specification and the thresholds are set against them.

How many wheel positions does a harvester need?

That depends on the machine — send the axle count and we will confirm. Capacity is 256 per receiver, so the number is not the constraint.

Can it be fitted during the season?

The fitting itself is a sensor on each wheel and a receiver; it does not need the machine stripped down. Scheduling it around the harvest window is the customer's call.
